Teachers in Rhode Island currently maintain their certification by showing evidence of continuous professional development. Creating a personal PD plan is a unit-wide assignment in the School of Education for all student teachers. The steps below are designed to guide you through this process so that we can complete it efficiently.
Reflect on your teaching so far. Choose one area that you know you need to strengthen. Use this area to list 1-3 needs that might serve as
What is the need?
How will improvement help your students?
How will improvement help your school?
RIBT Standard/Element Addressed?
1.
engagment of all students based on their unique learning needs.
Help my students retain and apply the concepts they are being taught.
This will help my school in that the students will learn what way they learn best and give them the confidence they need to succeed. This will help the overall test scores of the school.
Standard 4:
2.
Better focus my expectations depending of the grade level and students development.
This will help them because the goals I set for them will be more obtainable and allow them to succeed.
This will help my school in becoming more aware of how students develop, learn and offer more resources that provide teachers with alternative methods of teaching.
Standard 3:
3.
Learn and become more involved in the community in which I teach.
This will help create connections between me and my students. It will also help me form connections between my lessons and the community in which my students live.
This will help my school by creating a greater bond between the school and the community. It will allow parents to feel more apart of their childs education.
Standard 1 & 7:
One goal is to learn more about the community which I teach, in terms of traditions, community, socioeconomic, culture, etc. I feel knowing this will allow me to develop lesson plans that specifically engage my students based on their specific community dynamics.
Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
In the space below describe you goal and plan in two paragraphs.
In the first paragraph, describe a rationale your professional development goal. This rationale should describe the goal, the personal need that it will address, and how this goal benefits your students and your perspective school.
I. Professional Development Goal
My professional development plan is going to be focused more around getting to know the community. I feel in doing this I will be better equiped to connect with my students and make their learning a personal experience. This will also help in engaging my students because I feel they will have a more personal stake in their learning if there is a community connection. I also feel by knowing more about the community I will be able to get the community involved more in the school syatem. This benefits everyone in that the school will be getting my support, the students will be more invested in their community, and the community will be more invested in their students. RIBTS 1 & 7.
RIBTS 3.2 and 4.2.
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
I feel some good ways in which I can do this is by going to town meetings, participating in community functions (fairs, fundraisers, sporting events, etc), and volunteering. Also by signing up for professional development classses which will allow me to both learn and get to know my fellow educators better. Project Narragansett seems to be a great opportunity in terms of professional development and community building. This is a year long commitment but fosters relationships between Save the bay and the community. They also provide 2 funded field trips which again helps in building connections. All and all I feel like getting to know the community will open so many doors for me as an educator in terms of planning engaging lessons, getting more community support and involvement, and over all just creating a connection between me and my students.
